Reshuffling workers is not the way to revive a stale business, said João Leong Kam Chun, chairman of the Executive Committee of Teledifusão de Macau S.A. (TDM), adding that emphasis should be placed on changes in policies.

'From my experience in managing TDM's affairs for the past one-and-a-half years, I realise that a successful internal revolution doesn't merely rely on personnel changes, but policies that encourage employees to be loyal,' Leong said in a talk with journalism majors at Shue Yan University yesterday.

With ratings falling far behind that of TVB and ATV, TDM struggled to compete because it lacks variety in soaps and commentary programs, Leong said. He saw this when he started at the company and urged TDM to allocate resources towards focused development of the news channel.

' A local news provider is needed in any place and that is something irreplaceable from our neighborhood; that's where we put much of our weight and focus, ' he said.

To attract bigger audiences to TDM's news channel, Leong encourages the management to broaden their horizons and welcome any interesting yet workable production proposals from journalists so as to better serve viewers and promote the uniqueness of TDM news report.

'For example, our news reporters took their first step in covering features stories about the Olympic Games in London this year such as interviewing overseas Chinese staying there and also exhuming local cultural customs,' Leong said.
