Television stations in China are willing to invest more money and resources in variety shows compared with that in Hong Kong, said the CEO of EEG Ng Yu.

NOW TV Mango station launched last year. It mainly relays the variety shows of Hunan TV in China to Hong Kong. Ng Yu and famous artist Wong He said at a Shue Yan University forum that variety show productions in China’s TV stations are far more conscientious than Hong Kong’s.

“TV stations in China would spend more money and time in producing variety shows. They usually require artists to rehearse a day before the shooting. The preparation they do is a lot more than we generally do in Hong Kong,” said Ng. Wong used a famous show of Hunan TV “Strictly Come Dancing” as an example. He said: “The TV station need us to spend totally three months for dancing training. Both the artists and TV stations have to invest time and resources and turn out produced this successful TV program.”

It is actually not cheap to invite Hong Kong artist like Wong He to the variety shows. For example, TV station is responsible for the artist’s and his assistant’s air tickets, make-up fee, hotel fee, etc. At least HK$100,000 is needed. But it is not difficult for China TV stations since they have plenty of money.

In the past, TV stations in China would take TVB as reference to produce their variety shows. However, it is vice versa now. Heidi Ho, the vice president of NOW TV, said the time spent in TV program production is directly proportional to its outcome.

“Producers of China TV stations spend a lot of time in research and preparation. They may even tailor-make TV programs for artists. Comparing with Hong Kong, artists and the directors are not willing to spend time in preparation, the program standard keep decreasing,” said Ho.
