In recent years, Hong Kong audiences are shifting their interest from local and foreign TV programs to mainland TV programs. Many criticize that quality reduction of local TV productions should be the reason behind.

“The quality of mainland TV programs has already outranged the local ones,” said Wilson Chin, a famous local TV shows producer during a speech in Shue Yan University yesterday. He admitted that under certain restrictions, local TV productions nowadays are just under a conveyer system, “In Hong Kong, you even have to avoid filming any branded products. Comparatively, mainland producers would have more freedom in creation”. On the other hand, he also pointed out that unwillingness of Hong Kong artists in dedicating time to local varieties is a reason of the decline.

Responding to Chin, Wong He, a local male artist explained why Hong Kong artists seem to be more passionate in participating mainland TV shows. “Everything is just calculation,” said Wong. He used himself as an example, telling that TV stations in mainland are able to pay for at least ten thousand Yuan in inviting an artist to participate a TV show. But oppositely, local TV stations may not even willing to pay in terms of money but sometimes only souvenirs. According to him, that’s not difficult for artists to choose in this case.

Ng Yu, a local senior journalist agreed to Wong that unlike mainland TV stations, local TV stations cannot afford too much in productions. “Hong Kong’s TV productions always lack sponsors. Also, mainland TV stations can earn from TV commercials. The total revenue from TV commercials during a Lunar New Year TV show can reach five hundred million Yuan a few years ago, “said Ng. Under certain restrictions, he suggested local TV stations to improve their productions quality by producing more live shows, “By producing a live show, the whole production team can be trained and the quality of TV shows should then be improved at the same time.” ((received and noted))
