(When Professor Xia told the story of Liang Qichao, a scholar in late Qing Dynasty who turned political activist by spearheading the famous Gongche Shangshu movement 公車上書 — in 1895 seeking reforms and expressing opposition to the government, it could be considered as a veiled or indirect reference to the Umbrella Movement in which students and scholars alike participated in the street demonstration, seeking also political reforms. Therefore, even when Xia refused to comment on the Umbrella Movement, you should bring up this historical incidence and connect the two events to let the readers decide if Xia has indeed kept her words that it was not appropriate for her, a scholar from mainland China, to comment on the Hong Kong issue.)

Xia Xiaohong, professor of Peking University attended a journalism
assembly held by Shue Yan University today and advised youngsters
to concern about politics. Xia said expressing opinion about the society
is a responsibility of adolescents.

Xia said joining political parties or the government is a basic to go into
politics, otherwise it is just regarded as ‘care’ about politics and state
affairs.

She has no comment on the Occupied Movement because of her identity
as mainland professor.
