Hong Kong, 10 April – China’s television broadcasting industry is rapidly developing. In Hong Kong, however, the television industry is stagnating. Experienced media director Ng Yu said “It’s not the fault of TVB but ATV.”

Ng explained that ATV had not produce any high-quality programs with high viewing rate over the past decade. ATV could not make any threats on TVB indeed and it caused the competiveness sharply reduce in the television industry. Hong Kong television production therefore had no improvement, “it’s sobs.” said Ng during his speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University in the forum talking about The Development & Impact of Mainland China's Variety Shows on TV audiences in the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Asked about the Now Mango only reproduced China’s TV variety show and why the audience needs to pay $18 a month to watch, Ho Laitsuen, the Executive Vice President of PCCW Media Limited, said the Channel added a new guidance function to provide basic program information to let the audience learn and grasp more easily on watching programs. Ng Yu joked that although people could go online to see China’s programs, “they should respect the intellectual property rights. Use $18 to buy their personality.”

Independent senior television producer Chin, who was in the forum, pointed out that Hong Kong Stars were hard to spare more time to take part in programs as they played multiple roles and Hong Kong’s programs needs to numerous approvals. On the contrary, he said that the level of freedom in China was larger, so that the level of entertainment was higher. The artist Wong Hei claimed that Hong Kong artist would decide whether to participate in programs according to local population and salary. It is different from China which demands a harmony and consistency mode.
