Jan 22nd- Only two free TV stations can coexist in the long term in the Hong Kong market, said Mark, Lee Po On, TVB executive director and group general manager, at a university lecture on Tuesday.

“The idea that Hong Kong is suitable for two TV is not made by me but from research by the government itself,” said Lee, “however, I can’t say which two free TV have such chance to survive.”

Faced with fierce competition in the free TV industry, Lee said TVB is not afraid of competing.

“The main revenue for the free TV is the advertising income,” said Lee, “and the advertising market in Hong Kong is nearly sustainable in the past 10 years. There are 3 billion HKD in the market and TVB occupied 2.8 billion last year.”

Ricky Wong, led his CTI announced to join Hong Kong’s free TV industry in 2012. But up to now, the government doesn’t give out the domestic free TV license for CTI which is a hotspot among the public.

The advertising market in Hong Kong has not changed in the past 10 years, but Lee denied the notion that it is caused by TVB’s lack of creativity and make no attempt to get progress.

“No matter what the situation it is, it is more important to know about the objective environment rather than attribute the result to the subjective behaviors. Because the objective factors are the decisive ones, ” Lee said.

Compared with the free newspaper in Hong Kong, Lee said that there are more regulations on free TV. Government has the regulations on program content production, time and content of advertising, and also, technology that free TV is used.

“That is why Hong Kong still has only two free televisions in the current,” said Lee.
