Hong Kong is always seen as an open and democratic society where people can say whatever they want and the media is not controlled by the government(, so media in Hong Kong is fair and apathetic in which people put trust). However, the freedom of Hong Kong media is threatened after the Vice-Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Li Keqiang, visited Hong Kong. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, reckons that the media is essential for the government to interact with the citizens, hence he decided to dance with the media, rather than to fight with it.

Matthew said, “the media is just like a mirror, which can point out the mistakes done by the government. The government will take the advice and do better. The media helps deliver messages from the government the other way round. Thus, the relation between the media and the government must be close and positive.”

To achieve this goal, Matthew tried to approach the reporters actively. “ I answer every question asked by reporters and I initiatively give them the information I have like statistics,” Matthew said. In addition, he admitted that the salary of reporters is lower than expected. He hopes that it can be improved in the future
