In the past decade, the internet was developed in an extraordinary speed and had changed the way we lived to a great extent. Media was one of the fields that was largely affected by the internet era. Most of the people nowadays read news on the internet rather than pay for traditional newspapers. Yesterday a conference was held at Shue Yan University with guests from different media discussing the change of media nature under the internet era.

Many of the media heavyweights, such as Tencent deputy editor Li Fang, Apple Daily chief editor Cheung Kim Hung, Macao Daily News deputy editor Tsang Yi, and Commercial Radio Hong Kong News and Public Affairs director May Chan were invited to the conference to discuss topics like the media nature under the internet era, challenges and opportunities faced by news media as well as the room for development of media.

May Chan thought that media must be transitioned to new forms if they want to survive. The importance of video and audio has increased in media under the internet era. Cheung Kim Hung admitted that the sales volume of Apple Daily was decreasing in recent years. However, at the same time more and more people read news in the Apple Daily website and this obviously showed the change of nature in media.

When comparing the differences between traditional and new media, Tsang Yi used Weibo as an example. "I am a devoted fan of Weibo," said Tsang Yi. She thought that the instantaneity of traditional media could not be compared with Weibo. "I haven't read newspaper for a long time," she added, saying that she would even browse Weibo when editing news.
