Mobile Journalism Presents Opportunities

Because of the technology of smart phone, the journalists were no longer to carry bulky equipments, such as cameras and microphones, for reporting news, said a senior journalist in a university talk heard yesterday.

Mobile journalism meant using mobile phone for reporting."The era of mobile journalism was begun in 2007. When BBC reporter reported robbery news, he used a Nokia mobile phone for recording the scene and interviewing the witnesses. After shooting, he sent the video back to the company within a few minutes. The newsroom could broadcast almost in real time. It was a milestone as the journalist just used an equipment to report the news,” said Stephen Quinn, the Digital Development Editor, South China Morning Post Group.

Quinn used this example to show the journalists could be able to document the accidents and events in real-time updates sent every few minutes from the scene by mobile phone, which was much in the style of television reportage.

Xinhua had announced that it would send reports through internet videos globally. It showed that the newsroom used news platforms from smart phones to outdoor screens. In Quinn’s opinion, smart phone carried different useful apps, such as video editor and slideshow maker. The mobile journalism would lead a trend in the future in journalism as it could deliver multi-media forms of breaking and the news almost live. The multi-media would also build audiences online. He said that it brought a lot of benefits to reporting.

Besides, Quinn pointed that in 2010, 85 percent of the online news were multi-media images. It increased around 33 percent, according DS Simon web influencers’ survey. The main reason was most of the citizens could buy a smart phone. They could shoot what they see and aware in the city. The public could upload at once, which would be faster than traditional newsroom.

Although many citizens could be a reporter, Quinn suggested that the journalist were still professional and necessary to play a watchdog role. The journalists ought to remind the importance of ethics. As there is too much misrepresentative news in the internet, he adviced the journalists could use their hands and brain to help to verify the truth and balance the news reporting.
