Stephen Quinn, the digital development editor at the South China Morning Post Group (SCMP) in Hong Kong, announced the launching of the new mojo (mobile journalism) project in SCMP in a university talk. He advised journalists to use Apple products because of its simplicity and elegance.

Quinn said, “Apple products are of simplicity and elegance. The most important feature is, they are designed easy to use.”In comparison with Microsoft products, it is more complicated in usage. He said the SCMP group is going to equip their journalists with iphone knowledge for further mobile journalism popular trend.

There is a reason why iphones are adopted by most of the journalists nowadyas. Quinn said the capital for a normal person to equip iphone hardware is cheap, which should not exceed US$1000. “The computer in your mobile phone today is a million times cheaper and a 1,000 times more powerful than the one built at Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1965.” Quinn said.

Besides, iIt is also about a 100,000 times smaller which can easily put inside journalists’ pockets. In this way, the news production time can be shortened into 14mins, which is a lot faster than the common practice – 25 mins. It mainly saves time for transportation in and out the newsroom. Because journalists can now search wifi to upload and send scripts back to the newsroom for editors’ further edit.

Quinn seems praising the current technology into a inevitable position. However, he said, “I never say advanced technology make journalism easier. The mobile, is both a blessing and a curse.”

Mobiles like iphones are blessed as the naturally equipped with adobe software which is compatible. It saves money for installing the adobe software in computer. With a relatively low cost of external hardware complementing iphones, a high sound quality can be achieved which is highly praised in the newsroom.

However, mobile is a curse in the way they are too easy to use. They can be used for illegal things because there is no scope in usage.

Quinn cited an example of Grand final preview in September 2008. He said he was close to the athlete because the athlete thought that he was just taking a photo like a fans. He said if they use technology in this way, exclusive photos or stories can be made, but a evil attempt practice, the mobile could be used to shoot female’s private part under escalator.

He said there is no point in having ethics training when journalists are at work already. The ethics training should be built inside the journalism program.
