Heiward Mak, Dumb Youth Filmmaker, said more and more small-scale-produced films and new directors arise in Hong Kong. Many of them tended to set themes about current social issues.

Speaking from Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Mak expressed that Hong Kong film industry has been divided into two parts: large-scale commercial films and small or medium-scale production. This situation resulted the uneven distribution of resources in film making.

But Mak believed producing smaller scale films, short films were an upward trend now. ‘A film with commercial success, doesn’t mean that it can achieve success in the realm of art. There are more films disseminating realistic matters, social issues now.’

She agreed that people still wonder audience of small films would be much lesser than those of commercial films. ‘I believe in the years to come, number of people watching other genres of films will increase.’
