The new free-to-air TV broadcast channel of City Telecom will start to broadcast programs in coming years, making the TV broadcasting industry to have fierce competition.

Chairman of City Telecom, Ricky Wong Wai-kay said that there was a TV company earned 1.33 billion annually, which revealed that it was certainly a huge market for investing.

Addressing the journalism students in Shue Yan University, the former Managing Director of CBS, Ho Yuet-fung, agreed with it and said, there were in fact three free TV channels, including the Commercial Television which closed in 1978. But she believed that the industry is now much different with that in 1980s.

“We got more population and we even have the China market,” she explained, adding that more programs are broadcasting in mainland and more artists started to film in mainland as they can earn more.

“Taking Chang Ka-wing as an example, he chooses to join the mainland TV programs rather than renewing the contact with TVB(Television Broadcasts Limited), ” she said.

Moreover, Ho said the new free channel could push the script writers to produce better programs. “More players are better,” she said. She took the local TVB drama, “When Heaven Burns”, as an example. “It stirred up discussions between teenagers and I am happy to see this as the youth are the potential customers in the future,” she said with a smile.

Wong Wai-kay said City Telecom had invested $600 million for building studio and multimedia centre in Tseung Kwan O, which will put into service in the first season of 2014.
