(You should at the beginning point out that MRRM publishes only fashion and trend-setting monthly magazines that cater to the connoisseur and affluent readers. When we mentioned weibo, we usually called it a twitter-like social media just to make it easier for foreigners to understand. I think what she had encountered in China was a vivid story about how difficult it was for a woman from outside to run an editorial team in mainland. You should elaborate the story a bit more. The advertisers spent about 5 billion HKD in print media annually, not just in magazines but the print media as a whole.)

Mabel Leung, the managing director of MRRM Publishing LTD, said monthly magazine could survive by adding exchange platforms with readers, convert to free popular magazine and sell in China. However, she is just doing the first one.

She mentioned that the new social networking sites, like Facebook and “WeiBo”, are important platform for readers and advertisers. She said the operation of the sites is different from running a monthly magazine, the former should up-to-date but the latter is timeless. Her company had to hire extra director for this.

She said there is a big difficult to sell their magazines in China even she had twenty years in magazine publication. She felt trouble in approval, circulation and employer’s management, labeled herself as “Small woman” and gave up in entering China market. As a result, she focused to improvement the local version of the belonging magazines.

The advertising spent in magazine keeps around 14% in recent year, about 5 billion Hong Kong dollars in 2011. She said the company can earn more by printing a free popular magazine. She explained the advertisements in the free magazine can go people’s home easily; this is the goal for the advertisers, and helps to create a demand (as option) for them to promote their products.

“(We) insist to do the things we like,” She emphasized that with concrete eye-sight.

She pointed that monthly magazines are targeting on quality readers by in-depth reporting. She enjoyed the work will inspire her readers to think. She rejected to do something like the free newspapers with poor content nowadays. Besides making money, she said she would do something she likes but no free popular magazine.
