New political force in Taiwan arising

Reported by Ken Lam

The Taipei independent mayor election candidate Ko Wen-je has overcame all the other candidates and was reelected Taipei mayor on 24th Nov.

“There is a new political power which is not belongs to either the Kuomintang of China (KMT) or The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP),” said Dr. Peter Wong Chung-ming, who is an associate Professor in Shue Yan University.

After the final count of votes, Ting Shou-chung, who is from KMT, objected to the legality of the results as Ko overcame Ting by only 3200 votes, which is less than the polls reassessment percentage 0.03%.

Dr. Wong said, “The supporters of Ko Wen-je are not only from Taipei, they are from the whole Taiwan. The new arising political power Ko Wen-je representing could vastly attract the votes from those who are merely support DPP and KMT. The political influence of Ko Wen-je cannot be underestimated if he really runs for the next term of Taiwan president.”

In the other cities of Taiwan, most cities were controlled by the candidates from KMT, the current president of Taiwan Chai Ing-wen who is from DPP resigned as chairwoman after the elections.
