New role for state-owned news agency

Hong Kong China News Agency (CNA) were evolving so even report on June Fourth Incident was allowed to be publish without any intervention, Candy Lo, deputy chief editor of CAN said.

Lo said the public always assessed CNA that their news is pro-China and conservative, but she reported that CNA is the only local news agency that provides both text and image information to the global Chinese-language media, so it is urged to gradually advance to work on more news about sensitive political issues, such as to report June Fourth Incident five years ago.

Lo used the anti-national education incident as an example to show that “brain washing” is not an easy job, because everyone has critical mind so she believes that CNA will develop to a more democratic way.

Lo reported that CNA is facing challenges because news is everywhere nowadays, the internet has transmitted lots of the information, so the need for a news agency is decreasing. “We are worrying about to be replaced by the new technology, so we have to explore more exclusive news and work on the depth reports to get survival.”

Lo said that CNA has no commentary news as to avoid speculation and bias from the public because of their pro-China’s background, but it can be added in the future. And Lo said that it is necessary to report news about China, “you cannot lay aside any China factors when analyze an issue.”
