HONG KONG, OCT 30 – The role of the news agency is currently challenged by the era of information explosion with the popularity of the internet, which enhances the speed and scope of news dissemination all over the world.

Candy Lo, deputy chief editor of Hong Kong China News Agency (CNA), said that demand for news agencies is declining as it was no longer the only news provider. She said media nowadays can get stories from the internet more promptly and effectively that news agencies must improve their quality under the challenge of technology evolution.

“To be honest, we are worried about the declining importance of news agency. We are searching for new directions to adapt the change,” said Lo.

Despite the fact that HKCNA is a Chinese-funded enterprise, Lo said that the agency is trying its best to maintain impartiality in reporting. She regarded the reporting of Liu Xiaobo winning the 2010 Chinese Nobel prize and the coverage of the candlelight vigil of June fourth massacre in Hong Kong for five consecutive years as “a great improvement” to the development of the agency.

Lo said that it is important for their journalists not to “jump on the bandwagon” when reporting susceptible social issues, but they should be detached in guiding the audience to analyze particular incidents in an objective way.

Moreover, she also pointed out that accuracy is of ultimate important for news reporting. She took local broadcaster ATV wrongly reported Jiang Zemin’s death as an example, emphasizing that citing unspecified sources without verification can be disastrous.

“We are eager to look for exclusive news, but we will also focus on the validity of news,” said Lo. “We want to further improve by reporting in a more transparent and comprehensive way.”
