The deputy chief editor of Hong Kong China News Agency, Candy Lo, said the news wire must change in order to survive in the new technology age, adding that she is has faith this will happen.

“A news agency is much different from a general newspaper. We must see the whole picture of the news,” said Lo, during an assembly at Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

She added that for example, CNA journalists need to familiar with the situation of China. “However, the local perspective in Hong Kong is a bit narrow as they are too comfortable and do not know what happens on the mainland,” added Lo.

Lo said that to improve, reporters should absorb their surroundings, collect information from any angle, and then focus a story using journalistic experience.

“By that time, you will be a professional reporter. It is necessary to have a political view. We do not need to take sides but it is good to have an understanding,” said Lo. “Furthermore, mental training is crucial to face different challenges.”

“The role of the news agency needs to change. The trend is to be more transparent, so China News Agency may one day reach the level of foreign agencies,” said Lo. She added that at this moment, Hong Kong China News Agency develops online news, professional sharing platform, hoping to find its own way out.
