News is king!

João Leong Kam Chun, the Managing Director of Teledifusão de Macau S.A.(TDM), said he believes in view of the strong competition in Macau’s Television Industry, focusing on news is their only way to survive.

Hong Kong is too strong as a competitor

Leong commented on the running of Television business in Macau as painful, since Hong Kong has always been a tough and strong competitor. Macau television channels have always been the third on the list of Macau television audiences. Leong joked about saying they dared not to conduct any audience measurement as they were scared that once the result was out, to shut down the television network would become their only option.

Revolution not necessarily bloody

Leong acknowledged that as due to his background – former president of Macau’s Auditors and Accountants Association, people expected his first task to be reducing cost. Leong chose to review the reasons that have made TDM incompetent. He bought recorders and hired drivers for his reporters, recruited new cameramen as well as purchasing new cameras; he employed 25% more of the original size.

News is king

Leong then reflected when his reporters are now well-equipped, the management is responsible for hunting opportunities. Focusing on news is the hunted opportunity as no place can go without news. Leong admitted that in terms of drama, TDM can never fight against Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). Hence, the plan to survive is to provide local news and to expedite on international news.

Grab the chance to report

To strengthen the news in TDM, Leong sent out reporters to cover major news events such as the Olympics and the APEC where Macau reporters used to absent. On top of that, he added tidbits where normally would not be regarded as proper news. Yet, audience feedbacks reign.
