Dec. 12 –Raymond Wong, the chairperson of Communications Authority Broadcast Codes of Practice Committee, maintained there is no political pressure delaying new free-to-air television licenses.

Recently, there is public opinion pointed out that the government was reluctant to issue the licenses because of the pressure exerted from the mainland government. However, Wong said that this prediction is incredible.

“Nowadays, the term of political pressure seems to be overused, the mainland government wouldn’t involve into all these stuffs in Hong Kong,” said Wong at Shue Yan University on Tuesday.

Communications Authority Broadcast Codes of Practice Committee was established in April of this year, Wong said that it just gets the right to recommend, but it is no licensing power. The power rests in the hands of the Chief Executive and the Executive Council.

Wong added that he understands that the city's two existing license holders strongly opposes the issuing of any more free-to-air licenses, but he contends that the business community is only vicious competition. He never heard healthy competition. Also, the government has no responsibility to promise for their profit. However, he said that issuing more new free-to-air television licenses is good news to the citizens.
