No control on the development of dialect

Mr. Chang, the professor of the Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature in Chinese University attended an assembly held at the Hong Kong Shue Yan College and share his view that he takes open-mindedness on the creation of new phrases by the authors and reporters.

Asked what negative impacts will happen if many new phrases are created by authors and journalists for fun, Mr Chang said: "The forbiddance on the use of media created phase is very unnecessary, since the people will eliminate the bad one as the trend pass, and keep the good one as our dialect.”

He cited the pop star, Dicky Cheung, as an example to prove the development of these dialect languages should not be controlled, the dialect should be rise or eliminate within the society freely and randomly.

“Dicky had created a new phrase in TV show and it became popular, but now no one uses this phrase again once the popularity of the show was gone. Other phrases created in top shows will replace the old one.”

“If some words are not well accepted by the others, the society will adjust itself and decide what will stay in the culture and put into dictionary as times go.” Mr Chang added.

He also said the media carry a responsibility to the society beside the freedom to express, even though there is no restriction or guideline on the dialect creation issue.

“The media worker should review their work and think about whether their new creation would have a bad impact to the people. Also, they should not abuse the liberty and freedom that they can enjoy.” He emphasized.
