No nuclear power in Hong Kong's foreseeable future

HONG KONG, OCT 18-Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Incident after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March has induced public concern about introducing nuclear power as a future sustainable power source.

Except CLP Power Hong Kong, which has bought electricity generated by Daya Bay Nuclear power plant for years, another local power supplier Power

Assets Holdings Limited has no future plan in introducing nuclear power to the local market, due to the concern drawn by the incident in Japan.

Esme Lau, Public Affairs Manager (Media & Community) of Power Assets Holdings Limited, said,” Our company generates electricity through burning coal and natural gas, and we see no necessity to build any nuclear power plant in Hong Kong in the foreseeable future.”

Lau stated nuclear power was once named sustainable and clean, but public fear was raised due to the recent radiation leakage in Japan.

“Everyone is on scrutiny about safety of running nuclear power plant near urban area,” said Lau.

She explained the company is focused on developing clean and renewable power source.

“Wind power, which we are now on experiment in Lamma Island, is in our future development plan,” said Lau.
