Hongkong Electric said they have no plans for developing nuclear power so far.

After Japan’s nuclear disaster in March, Hong Kong citizens fear that the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant in Shenzhen may be harmful to their health. Esme Lau Mei-yi, Public Affairs Manager (Media and Community) of Power Assets Holdings (formerly known as Hongkong Electric Holdings), eased worries and said that the company will not consider nuclear power at this stage.

“Although it [building nuclear plant] is safe in terms of engineering science, we still have to care about how customers feel,” Lau said at a university sharing session yesterday.

Lau stressed that the company will keep on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The electricity supplier for Hong Kong Island is now using natural gas as an alternative fuel. Lau said that they will coordinate with the government’s energy policy.

Hongkong Electric is always blamed for increasing charges more often than CLP, the electricity supplier for Kowloon and the New Territories. Lau explained that the operation costs of both companies are different. Unlike CLP, Hongkong Electric can hardly find space on Hong Kong Island to build overhead wires. They build the wires mostly underground. Lau added that Hongkong Electric is only one-third of CLP in size. She hoped that customers can understand their situation.

[Fantastic article; really well done.]
