Stephen Wong Kai-yi, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data of Hong Kong, said the chance of personal information being misused would be very low if the government planned to renew the Hong Kong Identity Card in 2018.

Wong said the Hong Kong government has a sophisticated monitoring system and was experienced in handling personal information, so the renew program of Hong Kong Identity Card should be trustful.

When asked to comment on the encryption dispute that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had sued Apple Inc. since it refused to assist the FBI to unlock the iPhone of the San Bernardino gunman, “Privacy is crucial for all of us, but we have the exemption mechanism for it when under the national security crimes or related to public interests”, said Wong.

Wong added that the exemption mechanism for privacy would be activated if the issues affected the national security or related to the public interests.
