Octopus' 13 Years of Success

The world’s first multi-modal contactless smartcard system Octopus, launched by the Octopus Holdings Limited (former Creative Star Limited) in 1997, was a great success. As of 2009, around 20million Octopus cards were issued. Over the past decade, octopus card has turned itself from a transportation payment card to a multi-purpose smartcard. “We hope that Octopus can make everyday life easier,” said Prudence Chan, CEO of the Octopus Holding Limited.

“At the very beginning, Octopus was aimed to provide a simpler way to pay fares on public transport. Over the decade, we have expanded our service to small-value payments in retail sectors and other applications, e.g. self-service business and access control,” said Chan. Mentioning about the future development of the Octopus, Chan further elaborated on the vision of Octopus Holdings Limited, “we hope to expand the network of Octopus payment in the retail sector, and also to provide more different services such as internet access using Octopus, or even implanting Octopus into cell phones.”

The Octopus Holdings Limited continues to share its innovative technology of the smartcard system Octopus outside the country’s border. It expanded from a local business company to an international business firm, promoting the unique technology of multi-modal contactless smartcard system overseas. “Octopus has already helped the Netherlands, Dubai and Auckland in developing and implementing similar smartcard system. Currently, we are now discussion on the cooperation with the smartcard serviyaice provider in Shenzhen, China, so as to develop a cross-border smartcard system,” said Chan.

Chan put emphasis on the customer service of Octopus, “in last year’s annual customer research, the overall satisfaction rate is 97%, yet there were only 94% on the aspect reliability. We always strive to delight customers whenever they encounter with Octopus and we hope that the satisfaction rate could remain up-high in the coming future.”
