“TVB will not die out, even if the market allows more free TV stations to join in,” said Mark Lee Po On, TVB executive director and group general manager.

Concerning the future terrestrial TV in Hong Kong, HKTV is a newcomer, while it plans to establish 12 channels for great varieties of programs; it also needs to bear a huge spending cost.

“It often takes time for building up investments,” said Lee. Money flow does not only depend on the overview of rating and advertisement, yet the TV station has to establish good view and consistence development. “In the long term, only two free TV stations can survive,” said Lee, without mentioning which two stations.

Some said that the government guarantees the business of the free TV stations. Yet Lee said the government only safeguards the healthy developments, and fair competition among the mass media. TV stations will have to depend greatly on their own investment and income.

While advertisement income plays an important role in running a TV station, Lee added, the size of income shares stays the same throughout 15 years.

“Even if there are more supplies and operators, the advertisement income remains the same as 2.9billion, for both TVB and ATV,” said Lee.

He also stated, this data has revealed a great competition and saturation in the industry. And the government should again review on the market before distributing any free TV licenses.
