The founder of OpenRice.com, Ray Chung, said in HKSYU, that the cultural difference is a problem to tackle when expanding the company.

Chung graduated with a computer engineering degree in U.S.A. and started to setup website after being a reporter in Hong Kong Economic Journal for a year. “It is usual that I started up a financial website after being a reporter in HKEJ,” he says Hong Kong people using internet is not as common as U.S.A., so the website closed down after half year.

Later, Chung gathered one-million for starting OpenRice.com. He says that was the time of dot-com booming. It is because people were so willing to invest on information technology at that time, but the money was all spent in half year.

Chung says OpenRice.com is trying to develop in different countries to increase the competence. The prior places will be the South East countries.

“We have different ways on different national conditions,” Chung says, the cultural difference is the major problem they have to tackle. He raised an example that mainland people can just differentiate the Chinese or West restaurant, but not French or Italian restaurant.

Chung reveals that the company will develop a new app, Open Snap next month, which people can share their meal photos on it.
