Parallel development of Apple Daily and its animated news

Next Media Limited started its animated news using vivid animations and outstanding phrases. It is a breakthrough for traditional journalism. Apple Daily Chief Editor Cheung Kim-hung attended a seminar at Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon and said that the establishment of animated news has increased the number of readers, "It's a good news for Apple Daily, and even for the whole journalism industry."

It is said that the emergence of online news is challenging the survival of traditional newspapers, however, "the newspaper industry is not degenerating," Cheung said. "Actually we are inputting more resources into newspapers than we have in the past because newspapers have a much greater value nowadays." Recent surveys discovered that the sales of Apple Daily have been decreasing. Cheng explained that, actually, more readers are reading the news from Apple Daily, "Individually, Apple Daily is facing a gradual decrease, but on the other hand, there are five millions readers viewing our news by watching the animated news made by us. In fact, it means that our news is reaching more people."

Cheung explained that newspapers are made up by multi-media reporters who have brought many new elements to the newspapers such as audio and videos."The media convergence is being practiced in a high amount in the journalism industry and newspapers have become a convergence of text, audio, and video," he said.

He added that Apple Daily's animated news section is considering the possibility of covering financial news, features, and other soft news in the future. If it works, Apple Daily may present soft news mostly through animation. Cheung hopes that that could raise awareness of soft news among the public.

Cheung said that the format of journalism is evolving, multi-media is becoming a certain destination of journalism, therefore the growth of journalism is heading towards multi-media. When journalism becomes more vigorous, the chance of the survival of the newspapers would become more certain. More and more journalists can join this industry and make their own style of reporting.

Cheung stressed that there is no ideal format for running a newspaper, "Apple Daily and animated news still have a long way to go in order to find out new ways to handle multi-media elements and news quality equally."

The publication of Sharp Daily has brought a new element to Apple Daily news because it allows readers to use the audio format to "read" news. "There are QR codes all over Sharp Daily. Readers can use their mobile devices to listen to the audio news reports. They can even listen to the online audio and read the texts in the newspaper at the same time," Cheung said excitedly.
