HONG KONG, April 16 - Performing arts should be industrialized for a long term development, said a senior performing artist.

West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is proposed to enhance the development of cultural software and humanware in Hong Kong. The project gained a great concern among the cultural sector about the future of local cultural industry.

“Long running shows are needed for the local performance art,” said Tang Shu-wing, the Artistic Director of Tang Shu-wing Theater Studio and former Dean of the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Tang said the long running shows, like Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera or Lion King, was irreplaceable and could generate a lot of profit for the threater companies in the aspect of souvenir and world tour, as well as the side effect of cultural tourism to the city. He said the government wanted to use WKCD as a proving ground of cultural industrialization.

“Industrialization is a right direction for the development of local cultural industry,” said Tang, “We need a good balance in the field of art and profit.”

Tang said the non-profit-making threater companies were equally important to those profit-making in a pluralistic society. He said the government should still subsidize them as usual for the continuing of social education and cultural services.
