Pitching are needed for good stories

By Tam Yat Pang

Nov. 6 CNEX Foundation Manager Ada Li said that Hong Kong television stations do not have the culture of pitching documentaries’ topics, in-house production, a less competitive environment, makes producers less willing to look for quality stories.

Li added that only RTHK outsource the production of documentaries in Hong Kong while others usually do in-house production. However, it is a common practice in channels like BBC and Discovery Channels to outsource the production and ask producers to pitch topics beforehand.

“There are more independent film makers and production houses in UK. If they want to work on a documentary in those television channels, they have to pitch some good stories so that the channels will provide funding for their production. The environment is more competitive but the stories are with higher quality comparing with Hong Kong,” Li said.

However, Wong Siu Pong, the Director of a documentary named Fish Story said that there are more difficulties in producing a documentary in Hong Kong comparing with Mainland China or Taiwan. Wong added, Hongkongers are sensitive and insecure with cameras, which makes production team felt difficult to conduct interviews with them. Citizen with high sense of privacy and space also create barriers in filming documentaries.

Although facing difficulties in filming, Director of My Way Cheuk Cheung found that documentaries are more attractive than fiction films. Audience or even the production team will never know how the story flows and no one have to power to “amend the script”, that is what makes documentaries interesting, according to Cheuk’s speech.

To conclude, Ada Li said that documentaries not only provided a library of history for the next generation, but it also give a chance for audience to make reflection on some issues and it even could be a “window of the world” that allows different cultures to make connections.
