To Chung, the Chairman of Chi Heng Foundation, abandoned his banking career to serve in a non-governmental organization which concerns mainly about AIDS-impacted orphans in China.
To said that there are two epidemics happening in China. They are southwest such as Yunnan and Central China, Henan as an example. "I am worry about the percentage (Chinese people who were infected by AIDS) will increase to 3% of total population. Forty million people in China equal to the total number of AIDS people in the world." The situation of China becomes worse.
"In one village with 2000 population, there were 11 funerals within a day this August. Only one of them did not die of AIDS." Besides, AIDS also killed people indirectly. Five people successfully committed suicide because of the heavy emotional burden of AIDS. These showed that the death rate in those AIDS-impacted areas is relatively high.
The middle generations dying of AIDS, as a result, their children become orphans or the head of households. Lo mentioned that the society should have responsibilities to help the children. "If we don't help them, not only our loss, but also the nation's loss." Lo said. He stated that some of the children have great potential to be discovered, they will be pillars of the country in the future.
Lo is the "Outstanding Young Man in the World" this year and he hopes to arouse the awareness of AIDS. 1 December of each year is World Aids Day. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
