While the post-80s generation has been commonly criticized for its aggressive and rebellious behavior in recent years, William Chan, Executive Director of Hong Kong Youth Exchange Promotion United Association, urges society to listen to the youth.

“The younger generation yearns for care and recognition too, that’s why they are being radical and vocal in social issues,” expressed Chan in a speech given at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday.

Though the post-80s generation is often described as daring and violent by the public, Chan holds an opposite view. “In comparison with other foreign countries, the youngsters in Hong Kong are already way milder when expressing their social opinions.”

“For example, when Herny Tang attended the Youth Summit last year, the post-80 jobless man threw only a shoe at him to grab the public’s attention. If this happened in another western country, it wouldn’t be only a shoe,” said Chan.

To get along with the younger generation, Chan stresses the importance of respect and acceptance. “They are like sea urchins, the surface covered with needles but a whole different story inside. The youngsters take time to grow, and what they really need is just some more concern and patience from the community,” continued Chan.

“Without the help and encouragement from society, the younger generation wouldn’t be able to find their paths,” concluded Chan.
