Unlike reporters in some conservative countries, Hong Kong’s journalists enjoy a great degree of freedom in interviewing and reporting. And with the freedoms associated, it can be said that journalists in Hong Kong are holding some kinds of powers. But, those powers are not for free, they imply duties, according to Ivan Yau, a former anchor and reporter from TVB, during a speech in Shue Yan University yesterday. ((very strong and catchy))

“Look at the current political news. It has showed us that the media can hurt somebody but to benefit another person at the same time,” said Yau, pointing out the power of journalists. He believes that journalists have the power to influence the public with the contents and styles of their news reports. With their power, Yau thinks that journalists should also imply their duties by supervising the government and providing the society accurate information, “Stand for your values and what you believe. Do not be afraid of criticizing anyone or anything. If you truly have your points and are able to express them in a reasonable way, people and even the government would listen to you… Some government policies actually began from us. But at the same time, reporters should be responsible for making sure the information and stories they release are 100% correct. ”

Other than being brave to stand for their own views in reporting and confirming the accuracy of their sources, Yau also claimed that a professional journalist should be able to control his emotion, “A professional reporter should be able to keep calm under any circumstances. I still remember seeing dead bodies hanging on windows when there was a huge fire at Garley Building. Dead bodies were everywhere and I just witnessed how people died from fire… But I knew that I must keep calm and professional. How would the audiences believe you if you are emotional? Keep calm, and that is the basic manner of being a reporter. ”

((very very strong work here...everything fits together and good transitions...great excerpts and writing))
