With the launch of Sky Post and Sharp Daily, the total number of free daily newspapers had increased to six. Though the competition is now at a white heat, Alan Lo, the president of am730, stated that content is still the prerequisite to survive. He also stays optimistic towards the prospects of the press industry.

“According to public impression, there are no significant differences between the free newspapers and the paid ones,” stated Lo. Back to the starting point, content becomes the crux to survive. Being different from the other free daily newspapers, am730 covers more political news and international issues. Lo continued, “Our target group is the middle class. We have been spending lots of time to create our own features and make the news content more knowledgeable.”

When it comes to the argument with Next Media’s printing operation, Lo admitted that they are restricted by the 64 pages limitation. “I think 64 pages are ideal and adequate. We have a balanced ratio between advertisements and news content. We will not raise the proportion of advertisement in order to make a large profit, because that would lower the readability,” said Lo.

In a bid to withstand the threat from free daily newspapers, a cut-throat competition has also started among the paid newspapers. The Oriental Press Group decided to cut the selling price of Oriental Daily from $6 to $5. Despite this additional challenge, Lo believes that the price cut of paid newspapers won’t cause a big impact on the market share or the advertising revenue. “The growth of advertising revenue in free daily newspapers proved that there is still room to feed the market demand,” claimed Lo.

Although the newspaper publication market is becoming more and more competitive, Lo still makes a good prediction to the industry.“The outlook of press industry is still optimistic as long as they can keep the quality,” claimed Lo.
