Executive Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal Tim Chan and guest speaker at Hong Kong Shue Yan University stated printed newspaper is a sunset industry, but the press business still has a market.

Chan admitted that the decrease of newspaper demand is inevitable. “People can get the latest news free online instantly, people seldom buy the newspaper. But it also leads the demand of information increase. People want more and faster information. They are even addicted read the news every 5 minutes via using smartphone or tablet computer.’’ Therefore, he pointed that the press industry still has a market, but present in different media type.


He said, “Hong Kong Economic Journal launched the website in five years ago, people can read the news by paying the subscription fee. At that time, many people thought it will not be succeeded, as everyone can get the news free online like Yahoo online new, they are not willing to pay this fee. Eventually, there were 8000 subscribers within 3 months. It proved that people are still willing to pay the money on news.” He felt optimistic about the future of journalism.
