(When Professor Xia told the story of Liang Qichao, a scholar in late Qing Dynasty who turned political activist by spearheading the famous Gongche Shangshu movement 公車上書 in 1895 seeking reforms and expressing opposition to the government, it could be considered as a veiled or indirect reference to the Umbrella Movement in which students and scholars alike participated in the street demonstration. seeking also democratic reforms and expressing resentment against the government. Therefore, even when Xia refused to comment on the Umbrella Movement, you should bring up this historic incidence and link the two events to let the readers decide if Xia has indeed kept her words that it was not appropriate for her, a scholar from mainland China, to comment on the Hong Kong issue.)

Xia Xiaohong, professor of Department of Chinese, Peking University, said people who enter politics should have a certain political position in a government department or political party on Tuesday.

Xia Xiaohong said the youngsters don’t have sufficient capacity to participate in politics, but they have a responsibility to express an opinion on the community, and there is a difference between political participation and interests in politics.

“Though the youngsters in Hong Kong have participated in the occupying movement, this is only a reflection of their social concern, not actually enter politics.” She was referring that people who enter politics should have a certain political position in a government department or political party.

When students asked Xia Xiaohong the opinion of Hong Kong government’s destroying of things in umbrella movement, which may destroy important historical documents and the significance of documents, she said the protection of documents was everyone’s responsibility, but she avoided to make comments of the movement in Hong Kong.

She pointed that the appearance of documents made more in-depth study of modern literature, “Documents made us focus more on the details of the past events which might be ignored,”said Xia Xiaohong. She thought the more new discoveries of documents, the better study of history can be continued.

While Xia Xiahong was making a speech of Liang Qichao, the Chinese scholar, journalist, philosopher and reformist who lived during the late Qing dynasty and early Republic, she said whether as a son, as a husband, or a father, Liang Qichao had attractions. “He obtained the order of merit for his father and regarded filial as first position of life, and his love to his wife which was obviously reflected in his intentions of his design for his dead wife’s grave, Li Duanhui, and according to the education of their children he gave, his patience made his next generation like‘Blue from indigo plant is deeper than its origin’.”
