Public & Current Affairs Section being replaced

By Lo Pui Yee

Published: November 20, 2012

Ma Chim Wai, the executive producer of Public & Current Affairs Section implied that the program will be replaced by a one-to-one program, which will not be a government’s mouthpiece. However, the production crew cannot understand the reason.

Ma indicated that, the Director of Broadcasting, Roy Tang, decided to establish a one-to-one program about government’s policies which will be broadcasted during golden hour. “There should be give-and-take,” said Ma, “excluding programs like ‘Headliner’ and ‘Hong Kong Connection’, there is not many remainders.” This implied that Public & Current Affairs Section will be replaced by the new program.

He said that the new program’s release date is decided on Dec 21. The guests of the new program will be decided by the production crew. If they find any limitation of the mentioned policy, they will challenge the guests. With the crew’s professional knowledge, they believe that the show will not be the government’s mouthpiece. “The Director of Broadcasting does not suppose it will be a mouthpiece as well,” said Ma.

However, Ma and the crew cannot understand the reason why Public & Current Affairs Section will be replaced. He said that Public & Current Affairs Section is the only one program to provide evaluation on events in legislative council while other media only report the events. Even though newspaper provides evaluation, “not large amount of the public read newspaper” said Ma, “while TV broadcasting can approach larger proportion of the audience.”
