“It’s difficult to judge if the QE3 is effective or not, but it is necessary,” said Tim Chan, the executive chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, in a university assembly this afternoon.

The U.S. government introduced the QE3 - a third round of quantitative easing scheme - recently, which raised a heated debate all over the world, questioning the effectiveness of the scheme. Chan compared the scheme to medicine and therapy for high blood pressure patients. “The situation is similar. People need to use medicine to control blood pressure in an acceptable level every day. We all know that these medicines could not cure them completely, but they indeed cannot live without these medicines. It does save your life,” Chan said.

Chan explained that QE1 and QE2 actually did not solve the economic problem in U.S. “Even the Hong Kong Economic Journal criticized the QE 1 and 2 in our editorial columns millions of times. It in fact did not contribute a lot to solve the problem - the unemployment rate is still so high in the States, but we all understand that the U.S cannot live without QE.”

However, Chan believed that QE3 has its contributions. He said that the stock market in the U.S. has reached a new highest point in four years. Also 5 million iPhones were sold – although far lower than expected. The U.S‘s economic situation has already been slightly better than before.
