Television drama series“When Heaven Burn”(天與地) has given surprise to Hong Kong audience last two months which aroused a widespread concern in the city. However, the experienced television dramatist Ho Yuet-Fung, who attended a talk of Shue Yan University yesterday, said that unsatisfactory treatment offered to dramatists and lack of competitions between the televisions companies are the main reasons for the declining quality of the drama.

With controversial and revolutionary theme of “eating human”, “When Heaven Burn” became a famous topic between people. In recent years, many people may complain that television drama producers are not creative and they copied ideas from foreign soap dramas. So, it surprised many audiences as they generally think that the standard of Hong Kong television programs is declining.

One of the rationales behind the deterioration is working environment. People with common idea can be powerful if they are grouped together. “Teamwork is crucial to television production. As the duration of drama series is much longer than movies, we must work with daily discipline. We have to be responsible to our teammates,” said Ho.

Apart from this, lack of competition of television companies in Hong Kong leads to lower the working condition of writers. “In the past, the working condition was much better. Colleagues in research department would help us in script writing. It enriched the content and made our work efficient. But now, without good working condition, it’s difficult for the backstage worker to create high-quality television programs.” said Ho.

Little competition also brings low wage. "With only two main free TV stations available in Hong Kong, it is hard to better the wage in media industry without competition," said Ho.

Furthermore, Ho encouraged teenagers to grasp the opportunities that technology has given them. With lower cost of production, young people could make their own production easier. “We need rooms for young people, especially for those who are creative enough,” said Ho. She thinks that the industry can create channel for young people to introduce their products.

“I still have hope with the future market. As there will be more television companies in Hong Kong, virtuous competition among them can undoubtedly give a positive impact to the market and audiences would be benefited,” said Ho.
