The controversial planning of the new in-depth current affair program of RTHK is set to launch in mid-December, without ceasing the longevity TV show, LegCo Review.

Recently, the trade union of RTHK strongly opposed the idea of ceasing the LegCo Review, a famous in-depth interviewing program which reports the affairs about the legislative council and other political issues since 1986, and would be replaced by a new one-on-one interview show.

The executives of RTHK then promised to reserve LegCo Review, but the planning for the new interview show still had to be launched.

James Ma, executive producer of the public and current affairs section of RTHK, admitted that the first episode of the new program would be broadcasted at prime time in 21 December, yesterday at Shue Yan University.

Ma said that his department would be in charge of the production work of the new program. They had reached a common consensus with the executive that the new program should not be acted as the mouthpiece of the government.

Also, he said that the team could retain the power of selection of interviewees, as well as to decide the interview angles and questions. “Choosing who to interview is not a matter, what important is that we can decide to ask all of them about the issues that the public concerns.”

Ma thought that LegCo Review is the only TV program in Hong Kong that analysis the political situation and the LegCo affairs in such an in-depth way. Its production team members have to understand the political affairs and extract the main points for the audiences.

“As citizens are more attentive to political issues, LegCo Review becomes more popular. Thus, it is not suitable to ban the program at this moment,” Ma said.
