Society concern has been raised towards the amendment of the copyright regulation as many people fear that it would threaten the freedom of creation. Geordie Toh, the Legal Advisor of a global technology company said yesterday during a speech in She Yan University that the copyright law should not be over restricted.

According to the amendment proposal of the copy right law, anyone who derive or recreate an original work would violate the copyright law and should be considered as a criminal offender. Toh agreed that there should be regulations protecting original works from being abused for personal gains, “It is unfair to the primary creators if there’s no limitation on second creations.” He thinks that the original idea of amending the copyright regulation is good as it would protect primary copyrighters further.

However, Toh pointed out that the regulation should not be too tight, “I would feel disappointed to the legislative system if the regulation becomes too strict.” He thinks that it is very usual and acceptable for bloggers to borrow lines or names from books and movies when they are writing their own articles that those acts should not be viewed as violating the copyright law. Also, he mentioned the case that netizens satirizing Henry Tang by using photoshoped pictures based on the poster of the movie “Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets”. He thinks that it should not be counted a punishable offence admitted that he thinks the idea is actually quite interesting as it had showed creativity.
