Resuming trust of people to charity

Hong Kong citizens are so kind that they are willing to donate to different disasters around the world, but their kindness also exploited by different deceivers.

Since there are a lot of registered charities in Hong Kong, some swindlers would hold different on-street fund raising activities like selling flags and charity sales in the name of charity to earn money.

Meanwhile, the “Guo Meimei” scandal that a 20-year-old girl Guo Meimei showed off her wealth and claimed to work for the Red Cross Society of China in Weibo destroyed the trust of citizen to charity business. ((great reference))

The questions of how the charities make use of the donation and how to specify the illegal charities lower people’s willingness of donation.

“Undoubtedly, those scandals damaged the whole charity business,” said Louie Tong Hang Shing, the Community Relations Manager of the Community Chest of Hong Kong, as a talk to Hong Kong Shue Yan University students yesterday, “But meanwhile, this is also a good opportunity.”

“Because of the bad news, we have chances to explain more about our own charity. We have to tell our donors about the background and operation of our company and the allocation of the donation.” said Tong.

Through the explanation and clarification, the relationship between the donors and the charities is resumed. On the other hand, Tong said that citizen can check the list of registered charities in government website and call the police when discover any illegal fund-raising activities.

“What citizens should do is to figure out those swindlers with us, instead of not donating anymore,” said Tong, “We believe that people will be sincere to donate again when all bad cases are excluded.”
