Hong Kong, 21 Feb – “Our drama should be better.” Ricky Wong, the Chairman of CTI, claimed during his speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University in the afternoon. He said CTI was built to [compete] against TVB; it was going to fight TVB’s leading positing in Hong Kong media and to reverse the pattern [whatpattern?] of the television industry in Hong Kong for breaking down TVB’s monopoly.

Having over 20-year experiences in the computer and telecommunications industries, Ricky Wong swore to break the monopoly of the industries. He claimed that he was definitely not a “copy cat”. “I will only do what other people have never done before. I will only be advance.”

In recent years, Ricky Wong has entered the Hong Kong free television industry and founded the CTI. He claimed that he hoped to reverse the pattern of the Hong Kong television industry in five years. “I love to brag and show off.” Wong quipped. He proudly said that the company spent 600 million to build a new television and multimedia production centre which consists of eight studios, including one known as the largest multi-purpose studio of more than 1.5 million square feet in the whole Asia. “I hope to build a great television kingdom.”

Wong described TVB as the “Old world”, which his CTI was the “New world”. He criticized that the old imperial management had far lagged behind. He also lashed out that the “Old world” did not respect the creators and producers, so that they were often ignored. He claimed that the staff there had no power whether they could only obey the instruction from their head. Wong believed it was too difficult to improve and transform. In contrast, Wong’s “New world” encouraged employees to reward from merits, emphasized the objectivity and seek for continuous improvements. [Good comparison and contrast]

Wong set a target of setting up 30 channels in six years and shooting 260 hours of drama in this year. For the topic of drama, he claimed that he would release freedom to the production teams and would not interfere with the freedom of creativity simultaneously but just pay attention on fairness and reasonableness. “I need serious production.”

However, referred to the production of sensitive subject matter, Wong said that although there were much more freedom and creation space in the “New world”, they still had constrains.
