-5 Nov After the government released a detailed announcement explaining the rules of releasing free TV license this afternoon, the Chief Executive of HKTV said there was nothing new and meaningful inside the announcement at Shue Yan University today.

“The government just repeats what we have already known” said Ricky Wong, the CEO of HKTV, who added that Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung is the only person who opposed HKTV and that Beijing was not involved.

Wong pointed out the sixth point of the announcement, which is The advertising share of TV market. He said the statement that the advertising share and revenue are already full is not true.

“The market share can definitely be increased if there are good programs provided by other TV companies instead of TVB” Said Wong.

Wong explained that only 25% of Hong Kong residents are watching TV programs every night and the volume of audience in Hong Kong are too small compared with foreign countries.

“How did members of Executive Council know how big the advertising market can be?” Wong doubted about it.

“I doubt about the sixth point declared from the government.” said Wong.

Some believed that the main reason why Wong cannot get the license is that the China government worries about his company would produce programs criticizing Hong Kong and China government. Wong denied about it. He reckoned the Chief Executive CY Leung is the person who insisted HKTV should not get the license.

“I don’t think Beijing (China’s government) will control us” said Wong.

Wong said that he has asked for opinions from China and he didn’t think China will care who get the TV license in Hong Kong. He also mentioned that almost fifty percent of advertising revenue comes from foreign region especially mainland China.

“Advertising from mainland China is so important to HKTV that we won’t sacrifice it.” said Wong

The government announced that HKTV was the company who was not qualified for free TV license while Fantastic Television Limited and Now TV were qualified for the license. The announcement arouse public anger, causing government released a detailed announcement to declare the rules of releasing free TV license this after.
