HONG KONG, NOV 6 - A batch of documentary producers claim that Hong Kong lacks opportunities for rookie directors.

Documentaries in Hong Kong are not as popular as their dramas, which lessen the chance of survival among the documentary directors.

The society is less favor and supportive to the independent documentary, even the media cannot provide enough chances for the novices, said Ada Li, the manager of CNEX Foundation, along with 2 young directors in a college seminar.

“The RTHK is the only agency that provides funding for independent documentary.” said Li. She explained, the content of the local TV stations are heavily relying on their in-house production and out-sources production from foreign countries, this caused an absence of standing point to the fresh directors.

She stated, in the western world, media such as BBC or Discovery channel are well developed for the independent producers; almost 60-70% of the programs are the contractors’ productions.

She compared the development in both Taiwan and the mainland, that the demands of Hong Kong are less to the others. “Hong Kong is not really a cultural place” Li said.

The CNEX Foundation, a non-profit foundation which aimed to bring up both investors and the fresh director in producing the documentary concern Chinese society among the mainland , Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Despite the documentary is now at desperate moment, Cheung Cheuk, one of the directors at the seminar, believed that the documentary or the comedy style movies will be back in short. “It’s only a circle of demand, it will be back soon” he said.
