Schlesinger: Revolution-to China and Thomas Reuters

Thomson Corporation's acquisition of Reuters in 2008 raised public concerns of loss of independence of the two news organizations. However, the Chairman of Thomson Reuters China, David Schlesinger, stressed that the merge is a constructive great leap, which leads both organization to a revolutionary high level in Shue Yan University today.



“We have spent 3 years to accomplish our united goal,” said Schlesinger. “Reuters is a very good news agency, which strong in fields of Financial, Asia and Europe, whereas Thomson is strong at Legal, Scientific, and American information. The combination is a leap to get the best of both together.”



“We had now successfully create a new culture which extracts and combine the leading expertise spirit of the two companies”, Schlesinger said, “There are 50000 former Thomson, and people from Reuters, but the division wasn’t count as we had created a new culture.”


In regards of constriction of freedom of speech in China, Schlesinger said there was really a rough time. Right after the crackdown on Tiananmen Square, all the news source is being blocked. “At that critical point, the whole world relied on China's media to release the latest news, but the news reporting of Xinhua said everything is fine.”


"However, the freedom of reporting have been loosen in recent years," said Schlesinger, Journalist students from local and overseas university back to China after graduation, they are fighting for daring story in their position and trying to make changes in China everyday, in addition, civil rights activists speaks out loud in Weibo on varies stories. “I see it as a process, it’s getting better and changing continuously. I guess it fits China circumstance.”
