Senior Journalists Said Skills Go Beyond News Ethic

By Yennis Luk

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) held the seminar to explore the “ecology of media under the era of Internet”. Many senior journalists were there and agreed with news ethic and value should be placed in front of multi-tasking skills for today journalists.

Anthony Fung, School Director of Journalism and Communication of Hong Kong Chinese University, said the jounalism eduation should be improved with emphasizing the news ethic and value.

“Pratical training of students is enough today, and sometimes they have already got well understanding of reporting, editing and even post-production before they came to lesson. However, the ratio of pratical skills to ethic knowledge in the course outline still remains at 2:1. It is time to make a change.” said Fung.

He critized most jounalism schools in Hong Kong are too utilitarian. Though practical skills of journalists under the era of Internet should be multi-tasking, which is the new norm of today journalism, education of journalism should not be market-directing.

Professor Lam Yu-fung, Department Head of Communication of The University of Macau, also said that some valuable norms and ethic are important to today journalists. She reminded peers should always bear in mind that the word “digital” in today media is not the most important, but self ethical judgement is vital.
