Sharp Daily has an apple in AM 730

Controversy between AM 730 and Next Media Ltd has been revealed since a free newspaper under Next Media Ltd, Sharp Daily, was launched yesterday.

Sharp Daily becomes the latest and the sixth free newspaper in Hong Kong. It aims to have 1 million copies per day which is the largest free paper in terms of circulation. People thought the launch of Sharp Daily would threaten other free newspapers. President of Am 730, Alan Lo, denied it with a smile when participating at a Shue Yan university assembly.

“AM 730 and Sharp Daily were on two different tracks. Although we are both free newspapers, we targeted different readers,” he explained.

He pointed out that AM 730 targeted the white collar and middle class with a little sense of taste. AM 730 was promoted with its special columns. He thought those special columns represent what kind of newspaper AM 730 is. Also the layout of this newspaper was designed to be professional and characterful, and thus, can be differentiated from other free newspapers. Compared with other free newspapers, even with Sharp Daily, AM 730 has a relatively higher amount of knowledge including international news, economical news and interviews.

He also made some compliments about the clear route of Sharp Daily, saying ”Readers should be cleverer after reading a good newspaper. Sharp Daily can achieve that, at least the readers knew how to use a QR code.” He said Sharp Daily was executed in a way that differs with his imagination which is a higher and grander approach.

He said,” AM 730 and Sharp Daily are selling different identities which represent their respective company. People reading AM 730 and people reading Sharp Daily also have different identities, so there is no head-on-head competition between AM 730 and Sharp Daily.”

Regarding the other four Chinese free newspapers, Alan Lo said he has not much concern about the road that AM 730 will walk through. “We were the third Chinese newspaper and we had no experience of making a newspaper. We have the least circulation so everyone sees us as an underdog. I do not mind to be an underdog because I have confidence to the survival of AM 730,” he said.

The conflict between AM 730 and Next Media Ltd was still a hot topic. As Next Media Ltd designed to launch Sharp Daily, it refused to help AM 730 to make extra copies even when the condition could only be satisfied with extra copies. The attitude of Next Media Ltd did not violate its contract with AM 730 but morally AM 730 still thought Next Media Ltd was wrong. This caused AM 730 to lose 160 million of advertising income.

Alan Lo stated the latest development of this issue, claiming this was just a business transaction between AM 730 and Next Media Ltd and nothing serious was ongoing. “AM 730 will find ways to recover that, but it will be solved in the future,” he promised.
