“The merge of mobile phones and journalism lowers the cost of news reporting. Everyone can be a reporter but they won’t replace professional journalists,” said the digital development editor of SCMP.

“In the past, journalists did live reporting using hand-held cameras and broadcast vans. It is expensive to buy these equipments. However, nowadays people can report easily with their multi-functional mobile phones. It encourages the public to be reporters,” Stephen Quinn said yesterday at a Shue Yan University forum.

Quinn named this new way of reporting as “Mojo”, that is the merge of mobile phones and journalism. [Great definition!] Mojo is not only cheaper than traditional reporting but very convenient as well. He said: “In a football match in 2008, I used my mobile phone to successfully record an interview of a player who actually refused to do interview and instantly uploaded to the newspaper website.”[Wait.. so.. he recorded players without them knowing?]

Quinn quoted a new objective of Rupert Murdoch of News Corporation “We are not a newspaper company but a video company” and said that multimedia would be a new force in journalism. All the equipments needed for mobile journalism is lighter and easier to use than the past. It is also faster to report since it only costs about 20 minutes to edit and upload a video news clip.

Though the technology keeps advancing and changing the way of reporting, professional journalists cannot replaced by ‘citizen reporters’ who simply use mobile phones to report news. “Professional journalists have knowledge in copyright and law, a greater social network and specific training in journalism. It is not comparable with untrained public. [Good point.]

“Although smartphones make reporting and news editing easier and better than the past, the most important thing is not the tool but reporters’ thinking and techniques,” Quinn said.
