There are sports columns on television news and on every newspaper, sports value is an inreplaceable component in Hong Kong news, says Sing Tao Sports Reporter.

“I won’t be standing here, speaking if there’s no sports value in Hong Kong news,” said Wong Ka Ho at an assembly at Shue Yan University today.

In July this year, Hong Kong’s oldest television station TVB laid off about 25 people of a sports programme “Sports World” as a result of changes at its international business arm.

The decision aroused attention from the sports field and the public that sports value is being hindered and has become insignificant in Hong Kong news.

Different from reporting sports news on newspapers, reporting sports news on TV can bring audience “a sense of presence”, the feeling of being immersed in the situation, and they can be more involved in the event, said Wong.

Wong is a Sing Tao Sports Reporter who have been reporting sports events of different scales around the world. In June this year, he was sent to Russia for a month to report on the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“Through watching sports news, audience can feel the grandeur of the event and the warm atmosphere of the venue. This is the uniqueness of sports news and it could never be replaced,” said Wong.

He added, sports news reporters should look for ways to establish sports news a secure position in Hong Kong news.

“Only good content could attractive readers’ attention to read your sports news,” said Wong. As digital news is getting faster and popular, sports news should be done better and of good quality, he added.

Speaking of sports development in Hong Kong, Wong said a sporting atmosphere or culture is created with not just the athletes themselves, but also support from the public and the government.

“The stakeholders of sports are interconnected. In football, without the support from fans, athletes are nothing,” said Wong.
