Stephen Quinn: Help People Make Decision, Professional Journalists’ Value

Reported by Alan Yu

Stephen Quinn, the digital development editor of South China Morning Post, suggested that professional journalists’ reporting should go beyond forming and help people to make a decision. Also, the speed and accuracy of reporting were at the same priority and either one of them could not be excluded.

Nowadays, people can buy cameras and smartphones with advanced filming and Internet-surfing functions at a reasonable price. Hence, people who are not professional journalists can also be able to do a good reporting with the equipment. Nevertheless, Stephen Quinn said that professional journalists still had their value in Hong Kong Shue Yan University on Tuesday. The value was that professional journalists could provide useful information for the audience. In addition, the information should be able to help the members of the society or micro citizens to make a good decision in their lives.

Moreover, with the appearance of progressive technology, some journalists intend to report the stories at first even though the sources are in doubt. Consequently, those reports may include inaccurate information. Quinn thought if journalists reported fast but inaccurately, it could be dangerous. If journalists reported accurately but slowly, then they might be considered to be too slow. Therefore, he pointed that both the speed and accuracy should be included in a reporting. If a person was interested in reflecting and contemplating lives, the person was suitable for writing long-form magazine articles. The up-to-date news, which should be reported fast and accurately, were suitable for those who eager to hit the news at the first time.
